"The Answer" every BCA student is seeking

We are extremely delighted to let you know that KLE BCA - Rajajinagar hosted a chat session with Mr. Ashish Vaidya, Senior Software Development Engineer, Inventor & Musician on 15th December, 2013.

The chat session was hosted on . The session saw participation not just from students of KLE BCA but people from different states, diverse professions and age-groups.

We are extremely thankful to MR. ASHISH VAIDYA for giving extreme clarity and understanding on various subjects. Owing to the amazing given by the students we are hoping to conduct a similar chat session once again.

Most students hesitate to ask and hence the seed of doubt and confusion remains in the mind which eventually leads to wrong decisions of life. We wanted to ease out the way ahead for you, hence we made an effort to bring out this blog which covers answers to every question a BCA student might have in his/her mind.

Read on to learn and discover the unknown!

SUHAS: SIR, AT PRESENT WHICH COMPUTER LANGUAGES ARE GIVEN MORE PRIORITY IN THE COMPANIES.

Ashish Vaidya: Well, it depends upon the domain. Generally speaking, Java is quite widely used. However, I would say it is more important to properly know and understand the basic concepts in one language. Then you can easily use and apply them in any other language.

SUHAS: THERE IS A PARTITION IN JAVA LIKE CORE AND ADVANCED JAVA. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE B/W THOSE?

Ashish Vaidya: Java has evolved a lot since its inception. Depending upon various needs, various flavors are there now. To start you must learn Core Java. Then, you can learn about specific technologies that can be added, for example, Hibernate, Spring, Android Development and so on.

SUHAS: SO, IS CORE JAVA THE NEXT LEVEL AFTER C & C++?

Ashish Vaidya: As per college curriculum, they may seem like levels but in practice they are not.

SUHAS: I WANT TO BE CLEAR IN ONE LANGUAGE. I HAVE LEARNT C & C++. WHAT NEXT CAN I START?

Ashish Vaidya: You need to learn one language well and also get thorough with concepts like OOPS. Afterwards you may use a language depending on your field eg. in Web Programming you may use PHP or in iOS development you may use Obj C but concepts remain same. To learn them is more important.

SUHAS: I AM PURSING MY BCA. I DON'T HAVE A CLEAR PICTURE WHETHER TO DO MS OR MCA.

Ashish Vaidya: Depends upon the job openings as well as on college brand name. MCA is good to do if you are eyeing for a job. If you would want to start something on your own or are willing to work at a startup, then your knowledge is more important than a degree.

SUHAS: I HEARD COMPANIES LIKE WIPRO SUPPORT IT'S EMPLOYEES TO DO MASTERS. HOW IS IT LIKE?

Ashish Vaidya: Yes! In fact most companies do. Its either like study part time or you finish a certain period with the company usually 2-3 yrs and then they would help you with full time MTech/MS/MBA. Some may sign a bond that after the studies you will need to work for a certain period with company or pay certain amount if you fail to do so.

SUHAS: WHICH IS BETTER: FINISH STUDY AND THEN JOIN A JOB OR WORK AND STUDY?

Ashish Vaidya: Well, there is no standard right way. There are examples of success and failures in both cases. You need to figure out what you are convinced about and then make it happen. Personally, I would say the earlier you start the better it is.

ABHILASH RAO: THERE WAS A TALK THAT COMPANIES ARE SENDING BACK THEIR EMPLOYEES TO LEARN JAVA. IS IT THAT IMPORTANT?

Ashish Vaidya: Companies that are not big names in pure tech field may have done that. Ones like Microsoft, Google, Amazon wouldn't. However ,Yes, Java would be a good to learn language. It has vast application and user base. Plus, help available through online forums is abundant.ROHIT RAJHANS: INSPITE OF HAVING BRILLIANT TECHIES IN SOFTWARE WORLD IN INDIA, WHY ARE WE NOT ABLE TO CREATE SOMETHING BIG IN INDIA, LIKE GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK?IS THE LACK OF ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET THE PROBLEM?

Ashish Vaidya: Actually there are two issues-1. Lack of support for entrepreneurial spirit, which thankfully is improving. 2. We have many techies but quality is not that great. Recently it was identified

that less than 20% of people coming out with degree are actually employable.ROHIT RAJHANS WHY INDIAN FIRMS DON'T OFFER ESOP'S WITH THE CTC? FACEBOOK AND MANY JAPANESE FIRMS DO OFFER.IS IT PROFITABLE TO ACCEPT ESOP'S?

Ashish Vaidya: Its not about Indian or Japanese. Some firms offer ESOPs, some do not. Some offer till a certain point but when employee strength starts increasing too much, they may discontinue. You can't say its profitable or not. If company's share bounces a lot after they were allocated to you, it becomes profitable, if it doesn't or say, falls down, you may even incur a loss.

VISHU VISHWANATHA: I'M VISWANATHA FROM KOLAR, I COMPLETED MECHANICAL ENGINEERING IN 2012. I AM STILL LOOKING OUT FOR A JOB. I ATTENDED MANY INTERVIEWS AND EVEN CLEARED APTITUDE TEST, BUT I'M FAILING TO GET A JOB IN FINAL PERSONAL INTERVIEW ROUND SINCE I HAVE STAMMERING PROBLEM. PLEASE GIVE ME A SUGGESTION.Ashish Vaidya: Physical challenges may make it difficult to get placed in certain jobs. Stammering can be a downer if you are going for a customers interacting role but given you've done mechanical engineering and if you are looking for something in same field, the stammering might not be the only thing coming in your way.My suggestion to you would be-1. Figure out that other than stammering what other challenges you might be facing, and while doing so write them down. And then figure out ways to address each of those.2. Don't shy from any work opportunities coming in your way even if they don't look too lucrative. Being idle doesn't look too nice in your resume.3. Look for any part-time job for the time being where you can learn some skills that will help you later.4. While preparing for interviews, do targeted preparation. Find out what that firm looks for and prepare accordingly, for example, for algebra test you do not need to prepare all of the maths syllabus.Hope that will help. All the very best!MAMATHA: WHAT ARE THE JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR A BCA DEGREE HOLDER AND THE SALARY EXPECTATIONS? IS IT NECESSARY TO DO MCA AFTER BCA?

Ashish Vaidya: Opportunities in market are more for MCA but worry not if you want to jump to job right after BCA. The salary range might not be too high. It depends upon the company you are joining. My suggestion, either go for a start-up if you want to start right after where you learn a lot and then switch to a bigger company for more salary after a year or two.

MAMATHA: THERE IS A NEWS THAT MCA DEGREE HOLDERS ARE NOT GETTING PLACED. IS IT NECESSARY TO DO ADDITIONAL COURSES TO BECOME A GOOD PROGRAMMER?

Ashish Vaidya:Practice, not courses make you a good programmer. As I keep telling, your work, experience and accolades get more attention than just degree in the profile. Think of it from a person's perspective who has to shortlist 100 resumes out of 1000 or even more for interviews. Which would be given preference? Will it not be those who have something more and attractive accomplishment/experience to highlight in addition to degree which everyone would have anyways written?

OMKAR IZNOGOOD JACOB: I WANT TO BECOME A GAME DEVELOPER OR SOFTWARE TESTER. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY ON THESE FIELDS?

Ashish Vaidya: Get good with Java/C++ and OpenGL at least. Take up some projects in colleges or open source. You can develop mobile games and post them on Google Play, Apple Appstore or Windows platform. Would definitely add a lot to your profile and will be exciting for you too.

OMKAR IZNOGOOD JACOB: CAN YOU SUGGEST MEFEW DEVELOPING TOOL THAT WOULD HELP ME UP?

Ashish Vaidya Google it. Plethora of tools available and many good ones are even free. I haven't developed games myself but have heard good stuff about Game Maker Studio.

BHARATH GANESH: I AM DOING MASTERS IN NETWORKING AND I AM PLANNING TO DO MS IN CLOUD COMPUTING. IS THERE FUTURE FOR NETWORKING? IF SO WHAT KIND OF DESIGNATIONS I CAN APPLY?

Ashish Vaidya: Cloud is the future. To start you may either apply for SDE ie Software Development Engineer or SDET i.e Software Development Engineer for Test. There is lot of scope in Networking and it is only going to grow with things moving to cloud.

BHARATH GANESH: IS IT BETTER TO DO MS CLOUD OR CLOUD COURSE IN VM WARE COMPANY?

Ashish Vaidya: Both are big names and have work done in cloud. If you can provide me the links of details of these courses offered by both, I might be able to guide you better.

MEGRAJ MOREGOWDA: WHICH LANGUAGE IS IMPORTANT TO JOIN ANY IT COMPANY? WHAT IS THE CAREER PATH IN THIS FIELD?

Ashish Vaidya: Well this field has grown so vast that there are lots of career paths to choose from. You can be a Development Engineer, a Quality Assurance Engineer, a Content Reviewer, a Designer, User Experience Expert just to begin with. Further, you may continue to be in tech stream or can even move to management path. Even in terms of fields you have numerous options like Web Design, Mobile Apps, Networking, Cloud, Virtualization, just to name a few. The range actually goes from Micro Biology to Spaceships. The beauty of this field is that you may identify your interest and there shall be something related to it in this field and if it is not there you can start it.

MEGRAJ MOREGOWDA: WHAT IS EXPECTED IN COMPANIES WHEN IT COMES TO SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT?

Ashish Vaidya: A thorough knowledge of concepts and good knowledge of at least one language. The better projects you have done in your college, better it is for you.

KRISHNA BOLLOJULA: I'M PLANNING TO MAKE MY CAREER IN ANALYTICS DOMAIN.. COULD YOU PLEASE SUGGEST ME THE BETTER WAY TO GET INTO THIS ? I HAVE THREE OPTIONS. IM GETTING TRAINED ON EXCEL, VBA FOR EXCEL(BASICS), SAS AND IMPLEMENTING THIS FOR ANALYTICS PROBLEM(ADVANCED ANALYTICS) CAN I GO TRY FOR AN OPPORTUNITY AFTER THIS ? OR SHOULD I PLAN FOR MS IN ANALYTICS DOMAIN(IE,OR,BA) ? OR SHOULD I GO FOR THE ONE YEAR FULL TIME PROGRAM OFFERED BY PRAXIS BUSINESS SCHOOL IN COLLABORATION WITH KNOWLEDGE PARTNER "ICICI" AND KNOWLEDGE SUPPORTER "PWC" AT KOLKATA(INDIA) ?

Ashish Vaidya: You can train yourself in excel with free online tutorials and bit of guidance from someone in the field. If you should join some course, I think it should be Advanced one. You can always try for an opportunity and yes hands on experience is usually better than learning just from books. I can check with my friends in Analytics domain for a more thorough response the institution you asked for.

KRISHNA BOLLOJULA: WILL IT BE AN ADVANTAGE TO HAVE MASTERS IN THAT DOMAIN FOR A BETTER PROFILE AND DESIGNATION IN THE INDUSTRY?Ashish Vaidya: To be an employee, Yes! To be a CEO, well you can just start one.

KRISHNA BOLLOJULA IT WOULD BE A GREAT FAVOUR FOR ME IF U HELP ME IN CHOOSING A BETTER COLLEGE FOR DOING MASTERS(IF ITS IMPORTANT TO SUSTAIN WELL)

Ashish Vaidya: Colleges are helpful in entering the industry. Later what matters is your work. I'll definitely check with my friends in this field and help you. Please inbox me and I'll get back within 10 days.
