Week 5- Who saved Saul??

So we're nearly half way through the semester! Time is flying by!

So we started the class by discussing the assigned readings. We began with Buxton's avalanche case. I found the case really interesting. At the start I was kinda thinking how did this relate to managing systems development-but after reading it over a few times it made sense to me. We all wondered who saved saul? I came to the conclusion myself that a number of factors saved Saul- the guidelines, tools, equipment, instinct, probes, shovels and so on. Which brings me back to my point of how this case related to the course. A system is defined as a set of interrelated elements. All of the elements and factors that saved Saul were interrelated-they all worked together to save him; without one, the others would not work.

Why You Should Learn Node.js Today

Let's talk about a technology that has been getting a lot of well-deserved hype lately: . Node.js is the hottest new technology in Silicon Valley. Currently in use by Microsoft, VMWare, Ebay, Yahoo, and many more top tech companies, Node.js is the perfect skill to open up amazing career opportunities for any software developer.

You may have heard of Node.js, but know only that it has something to do with "real-time" or "highly scalable" apps. You may have heard that Node.js is JavaScript for the server-side (and you may be wondering why anyone would want that!). Or maybe you know exactly what Node.js is, but aren't sure when or why to use it. Just sit back, and I'll explain everything.

Quotes and Sayings for Software Developers

I saw this today at Forbes.com:

" They are happy men whose natures sort with their vocations. "-- Francis Bacon

I think the above is a particularly good way of explaining why I feel very happy to be a software developer. I love what I do, and so, I find, it is a lot easier to get me to do that work, than it would be to get me to do something I did not like doing. And in the end, not only am I happy, hopefully everyone, including the business owner that I work for, and the customers of that business, can be happy to, because they each have to get what they need too.I think there really is a temperament that is suited to software development, and that its pretty safe to say that I have it.

Seagate cooks up game-changing cloud storage hardware

Brags about "reinventing" or "disrupting" this or that kind of technology are so common these days they might as well be white noise. But Seagate seems to have just developed a new kind of storage system for the cloud that might well be quite disruptive -- if it ever gets implemented by cloud builders.

Seagate calls it the platform, and it's designed as a way to enable cloud data centers to improve the way they handle storage by having the storage system itself offload as much of the processing related to storage as possible.

Samsung's new dev tools bring multiscreen capabilities to TV and mobile

Samsung has just announced several new and improved software development kits (SDK) at its first ever developers conference in San Francisco that could mean lots more features to your existing Samsung hardware. The biggest news is a new multiscreen SDK that would allow users to share content across various Samsung devices, be it smartphones or their television set, thanks to a new cloud-based publishing system. Especially exciting for gamers, Samsung has also partnered with Unity technologies to create a multiscreen gaming engine that allows for gaming on any TV -- as long as you use a Samsung phone or tablet of course. "We take the very best of what Unity is, and combine it with the best of what Samsung has to offer," said David Helgason, CEO of Unity, on stage.

Speaking of smartphones and tablets, Samsung has also released a fresh mobile SDK that would lead to a number of improvements to existing hardware. There's a lot to dig through here, but a few notable ones include more precise S-Pen controls, new visual animations, seamless handwriting recognition, and a multi-window capability that lets you run multiple resizable apps simultaneously. An example of this was shown at the conference using the new Twitter app, where you can tweet and browse the web at the same time. What especially delighted us is something called Samsung Chord, which essentially promises peer to peer connections across devices. A stage demonstration showed how you could use Chord to "pinch" the screens of two side-by-side tablets to instantly connect them and start playing a joint game of air hockey.

Expert PHP and MySQL

PHP is a server-side scripting language designed for web development but also used as a general-purpose programming language. PHP is now installed on more than 244 million websites and 2.1 million web servers.Originally created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995, the reference implementation of PHP is now produced by The PHP Group. While PHP originally stood for Personal Home Page, it now stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, a recursive acronym.

PHP code is interpreted by a web server with a PHP processor module, which generates the resulting web page: PHP commands can be embedded directly into an HTML source document rather than calling an external file to process data. It has also evolved to include a command-line interface capability and can be used in standalone graphical applications. PHP is free software released under the PHP License, which is incompatible with the GNU General Public License (GPL) due to restrictions on the usage of the term PHP. PHP can be deployed on most web servers and also as a standalone shell on almost every operating system and platform, free of charge.

Advice: Don't Do It Right

I remember when, years ago, I was at elementary school I got an important advice from my grandmother. Once, checking my homework she noted that I should pay more attention and care to it, despite the illusion that doing it faster saves me time. The problem was that I didn't want to do homework - it bored me - what I wanted was playing video games, taking a walk or watching some Discovery channel movies about science and hi-tech. With homework I pursued the sole purpose - to get rid of stupid exercises in arithmetic and Russian as fast as possible and get to worthy things. Obviously, this impacted the quality, which was difficult not to notice for my granny and thus she tried to help and motivate me to do better. She used quite a powerful argument saying that everything that's not done right will have to be redone later. So being more careful and focused from the beginning I will be able to avoid returning and save a lot of time for great things even though this might not look this way at the first glance. I did grasped the idea and, although sometimes I failed to focus on boring stuff giving way to mistakes, I kept in mind the notion that one should take care to do everything the right way so that they don't have to come back to it long after.

Still, now it seems to me that I got the advice wrong and took it too far, which produced a very bad side effect on the way I work. What I mean is that when trying to create something that is important and interesting to me I become obsessed with the quality of the thing long before it even begins to emerge. This way I quickly find myself in exhaustive search for the right ways to implement every tiny piece of what I am trying to accomplish and during its course I usually can't allow myself to sit down and build something little and potentially dirty, because I remember this is a waste of my time. One may think that is great and helps me create nice and wonderful stuff, however the reality is harsher. This chase for perfection giving birth to the fear of dirt actually raises a stone wall between me and long waited moment of achieving my goals.

Design Patterns in C# series

During this series I'll talk about what are design patterns, why are they important in software development, what are common uses cases, which advantages do they bring to software as well as how they are implemented in C#. In order for you to be able to fully understand the specifics of the patterns implementations I'm assuming that you're familiarized with OOP basic concepts like encapsulation, polymorphism, inheritance, abstraction, delegation among others, if you're not familiar with them here are some resources where you can find more about them: , . In this first post of the series I'll talk about a brief introduction to Design Patterns, what are they, what benefits they provide and how are they generally classified.

Now let's start by defining what a design pattern is: as a general concept a pattern is a model used as guideline for doing something; In terms of software engineering A DESIGN PATTERN IS A WELL-KNOWN REUSABLE SOLUTION TO A COMMON PROBLEM. A design pattern is not a complete solution that can be converted into code instead it provides guideline and advice on how the structure, relationships and interactions between the classes or objects should be. The use of design patterns provide benefits not only to software architects they also provide a wide range of benefits to software developers, testers and project managers, for example:

He enjoys flying, running, snow skiing, racquetball and spending time with his children. His parents, Rodolfo and Nora Noriega, reside in Gilbert, Arizona. War Gaming

One of the biggest selling genres of games are war games. People often wonder why war games are so popular. It's probably because people like the feeling of playing the hero and saving the world but in a modern context. Having fast paced action scenes gives players a great sense of immersion and enjoyment with explosions and bullets flying overhead.War games come in many shapes and forms but regardless these war and combat games seem to strive and pass out other genres of games.

We discussed Americas army in class and how this game was used to target certain ages groups to try and recruit them for the american army. The idea that they'll play this simulator over and over to prepare them for the army to me is a bit of a stretch. There's quite a difference between sitting in front of a screen and then being in that simulated situation in real life. When it comes down to it a lot of people who think by playing a game will prepare them for a combat situation and then actually being in that situation will suddenly realise the disconnect between simulated and real environments. However from my past experience ofgames it is easy to get drawn into a game for hours and be completely immersed in it and think you're a part of the battle with a group of soldiers and because of this games/simulators like Americas Army can cause people to be desensitized to this violence and potentially get them into the mind frame "it's like a video game". If companies are developing these game/simulators for the purposes of recruiting I think it's hard to judge the company it self. In one way it's wrong to be targeting youths in this way and making them think that this is what it's like to be in a war. On the other hand though to a software development or game development studio because for them it's just another game or project and they might not be interested in the application or intended use of the product.

It's 2 A.M. (Why I Chose IT)

IT'S 2 IN THE MORNING, EVERYBODY HAS GONE HOME. YOU ARE LEFT ALONE IN A WELL LIT OFFICE WITH ONLY THE SOUND OF THE KEYBOARD AND THE CLICK OF YOUR MOUSE. YOU PLAY MUSIC FROM YOUR CELL PHONE TO BARRICADE YOURSELVES FROM SUDDEN SOUNDS THAT MAY REMIND YOU OF OFFICE GHOST STORIES YOU HAVE READ OR HEARD FROM YOUR CO-WORKERS. WHY ARE YOU WORKING SO LATE AT NIGHT? TO FINISH A BUG FIX TO BE RELEASED THE FOLLOWING MORNING.IF, ELSE, DO WHILE, VARIABLE X SHOULD BE MINUS VARIABLE Y. YOU COMPILE, BUT BUGS ARE FOUND. YOU FIX AND COMPILE AND COMPILE UNTIL IT BUILDS. BUT STILL, THE OUTPUT IS INCORRECT. AFTER TEN HOURS LOOKING AT THE SCREEN, YOUR EYES START TO ACHE, THE VEINS IN YOUR HAND FEELS NUMB AND SHAKY.YOU GO TO THE VERANDA TO TAKE A BREAK. IN THE VERANDA, YOU LET THE COOL BREEZE OF THE EVENING WASH AWAY THE STRESS OF YOUR WORK. AND WHEN YOU START TO WALK BACK TO YOUR WORKSTATION, THE SOLUTIONS SUDDENLY STRIKES YOU!TYPE, CLICK, TYPE CLICK, BUILD AND COMPILE; ALAS!THE OUTPUT IS CORRECT; YOU COMMIT YOUR WORK AND THANKFULLY GO HOME UNDER THE HEAVY GLOW OF THE MOON LIGHT. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED TONIGHT IS ONLY A FRACTION OF WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. YOU ARE AGAIN WORKING LATE THIS EVENING, TYPE CLICK TYPE CLICK, NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK. YOU ARE FRUSTRATED, BANG ON THE KEYBOARD, BANG ON THE MOUSE. YOU SWEAR AS YOU SEE THE INCORRECT OUTPUT. IN A COUPLE OF HOURS, THE SUN WILL RISE. YOUR SUPERIOR TELLS YOU TO GO HOME AND CONTINUE IT THE FOLLOWING MORNING. YOU GO HOME AND FALL ASLEEP. BUT WHAT YOU DREAM ABOUT IS THE UNFINISHED CODE.THE INCORRECTLY DESIGNED SCREEN; YOU MUMBLE WHILE IN YOUR SLEEP, "IT SHOULD A DROPDOWN NOT A TEXT." YOUR FATHER WAKES YOU UP AND TELLS YOU TO SLEEP IN YOUR ROOM BECAUSE YOU FELL ASLEEP IN THE SOFA.YOU SLOWLY GET UP AND WALK TO YOUR BEDROOM BUT WHAT IS RUNNING IN YOUR MIND RIGHT NOWTHE UNFINISHED CODE.

When I was choosing my course in college,I had only two criteria in mind, one, it should not be boring and two it should have not that much math subjects. Because when I graduate from college and gradually work, I should be doing something that I love and what I learn in college is pretty much what I am going to do my whole life.So with those two criteria, I chose IT or Information Technology. Also, during that time and up to now, demand for IT professionals is high especially in our country. It is one of the top paying jobs all over the world. You can earn high every month while doing what you love! Isn't that great?

A perennial problem in software development is coping with change. This post explains

It's happened again!! I started writing a blog about UNIT TESTS (see my next post coming soon) and ended up writing a lengthy introduction about CHANGE. So I have split the intro into this separate post. This is so I don't overload you and so you can skip it, if you're not interested. (However, you probably should read the Conclusion below anyway.)the types and reasons for change and the costs involved. It also looks at how change is traditionally handled and how AGILE development and UNIT TESTS can help.

The Intelligence Behind Successful Software Management: "I Want Predictability"

If software projects were bridges, about one third would fall down during construction; about one half wouldn't get all the way across the river; and only one sixth would carry traffic. The authors of Five Core Metrics explain how an understanding of the role the five core metrics-- time, effort, quality, productivity, and function--is the first step in getting out of this trouble.

* "What do you want for Christmas?" I asked a neighbor of mine in northern Virginia, at a little pre-Christmas good-cheer gathering. He is the chief executive officer of a mid-sized company.

4 Keys To Being A Professional Freelance Developer

"Being a professional is more than being a good craftsman. If there's one key point you should take away from this article, it's that perceptions matter, and probably quite a lot more than you think. , nurses with white uniforms were rated by adults as more professional. Another demonstrated unconsciously causes people to make personality judgements.

Software development is a service, and as service providers it's important to be mindful of the people we are serving. While you shouldn't go too far and become obsessed with presentation alone, in general I find that many developers I encounter, especially those who do mostly remote work, do not represent themselves as well and could vastly improve the amount of work they receive with a few simple considerations.

I'll cover 4 main points, COMMUNICATION, PRESENTATION, SELF-PROMOTION and CREDIBILITY. The content is more relevant to remote developers, but the credibility section may be important to people looking for contract jobs in person or locally.

Writing Code Like a CEO

"The average developer makes hundreds of decisions every day. This applies to programmers of all types including newbies, seniors, leads, and architects. They prioritize the work to be accomplished, which bugs to investigate, how to fix issues, and the programmatic path taken to solve problems. Although some of these decisions are smaller than others, they all have varying levels of impact. When too many competing needs arise, seeking guidance on priority is a simple, yet smart decision. Eliminating the haze helps to align the importance of work and reduce the static/noise. But what about the smaller decisions in a day? Although smaller, each of these materialize in different ways.

Should this code be broken up? Should this be a configuration option? Should this code be centralized? Should this code be refactored? These and other questions like it are some of the decisions made by developers every day. Although it can go unnoticed, approaching these decisions can be just as important as fixing a high priority production issue. These decisions affect how much time is spent building, testing, releasing, and maintaining each feature. Not sure how much time to spend on an item? An easy trick is to think like a CEO. Take a moment and complete the statement: "If I ran the company, I would recommend..."

This line of thinking can serve as a lighthouse during the decision making process. Be aware that thinking like a CEO is not easy at first. Instead of mentally switching roles, many developers attempt to attach the CEO mentality to their existing thought process. This has too much influence and will ultimately sway any decision making. Most CEOs know very little about programming beyond a rudimentary understanding. They think in terms of time, money, and value. In most companies, programming is one part of a larger puzzle.

Fifteenth anniversary of the Halloween documents

Fifteen years ago, the "", were released by an unauthorized tipster, and published to the internet by Eric S. Raymond. These were a set of confidential memoranda within Microsoft describing the threat of Linux. If you recall, Microsoft had an overwhelming monopoly among computer operating systems at the time. What made the documents so controversial was that the internal deliberations at Microsoft were completely out of step from their public statements about Linux.Microsoft had dismissed and ridiculed Linux in public but internally it was agreed that such a strategy would not work in the long term.

"OSS is long-term credible ... FUD tactics can not be used to combat it." This quote captures several important aspects of the memos.First, there was a realization that open-source software was high quality, and that the competition lay in the open-source community rather than a particular software release. At the time, there were hackles and smirks about the fact that underhanded marketing approaches like "FUD" (or fear, uncertainty, and doubt) were discussed so casually.

Should You Hire an In-House Developer or Outsource Overseas?

THE BENEFITS OF OUTSOURCING OVERSEAS

Compound Mediation in Software Development: Using Genre Ecologies to Study Textual Artifacts

The strategy that I chose was to look at the title of the article. I began to break down each word of the title and if I did not know the word I would look it up. I was trying to find the context of these words also and a meaning on what they were trying to get across as a whole. The first word was compound which is two things brought together. Next was mediation which is a way to resolve a dispute. The next words were Software Development, which has to do with computer programming and writing and maintaining source code. So my conclusion was the first few words in essence had to deal bringing things together in order to solve a problem with source code or the idea of Software Development as a whole. The next sentence was genre which has to do with putting similarities together. Next were ecologies which are the scientific study of interactions among organisms and their environment. And last but not least were textual artifacts, which I believe to be books from the past. So what I believe the title is trying to say about the upcoming article is that it has to do with using different types of software development in order to date or understand more about books or textual artifacts by studying the environment in which they were found.

In our second class we learned about the Software Development Lifecycle (Scope, Time, Quality and Cost). We discussed the dependencies between each and also the problems that the lack of a clearly defined scope can have on time, quality and cost. There were many comments on which scope, time, quality or cost was the most important factor in software development however we could not reach a common conclusion. The group was evenly split between scope and cost as their impact on each other is clearly documented.

The second half of the class was taken up with a group exercise, each tablet was split into teams and asked to construct an electronic Lego robot which had the ability to learn from its surroundings. This proved somewhat of a challenge given the limited time assigned and the complexity of the task. To order to utilise everyone as much as possible we assigned roles to each team member at the beginning this meant the team was able to work as an assembly unit to source, group and construct parts. This entire process was then overseen by a manager to keep us all inline. Our ability to work as a group was somewhat challenged by the fact that our kit did not contain all the required parts to build the robot however our manager saw us through and kept us all cool and as a result we managed to complete our robot with seconds to go before time expired.

Following the task there was a group discussion to reflect on the task and its learning. It quickly became apparent from this conversation that the teams to complete the tasks had clearly assigned roles and worked together as a unit, communicating efficiently and effectively. This meant there was no duplication of effort and each person knew exactly what they were doing.

Software Development Podcasts

I was recently chatting with some coworkers about podcasts I listen to, so I thought I should document that list for easy sharing and to find some gems I am missing.

I have taken advantage of my commute time and turned my commute into as talked about by Zig Ziglar. I heard this idea via some fitness blogs I was reading where the trainers were talking about ways to continuously improve, and decided I would apply that idea to my commute, walks, or even running errands.

Software Development Project, Positive Maturity

Positive Maturity is a senior assistance company based out of Mountain Brook, Alabama. They specialize In assisting senior citizens with benefits ranging from getting jobs to finding the medical assistance they need to make there life's easier. Positive Maturity is the center for call in's from seniors looking for assistance in the Alabama. The company wanted to design some software to make it easier for their employees to access information about all the senior assistance companies the Alabama area. I received information about the project and quickly looked into ways I apart of the creation process. I am a Computer Science majorperusing a career in software or application development so I thought this would be great experience. After a couple of meetings with the Executive Director and Project Manager over the project, we compiled a collaboration of features that final product would possess. The software would connect to a database that was written on the companies server and in the form ofa desktop application. The application would allow employees the ability to add, update, search, and delete information from the database. Specific unique features that was requested by the Project Manager was the ability to do partial string searches on the database, searching for agencies information based on a zip code range, and a login feature that would add some security measures. The project took about 1-2 months to complete on my own with schedules incremental meetings with the Executive Director and Project Managers keep them u to date on the progress I was making. Working on this project has giving me some great real work experience with the programming languages SQL and JAVA. I have also gained experience working with customers through the developmental process and presenting a product they were pleased with. The Executive Director shared with me that I was a pleasure working with and explained each increment in a way that was understandable even by a non technical individual. The Executive Director and the Project Manager were gracious enough to write reference letters that I should be receiving in the next week of so. I am now in search for the next project I can get my hands on!

Obamacare Site Needing Fresh Talent Added to Downtime

To repair its troubled health-care website, the Obama administration may need to add project workers with fresh talent, take portions of the system off line for days or weeks, and conduct more comprehensive tests to prevent crashes and delays, technology experts say.

'You tend to have a group of insular experts who are close to the project and have pride of ownership, and they really try to make it right,' said John Halamka, chief information officer at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, in a phone interview. 'It's best to say pride doesn't matter here.'

Infosec And Me

Attending the this year lead me to take a significant step out of my comfort zone in that I feel safe in virtualisation conferences, will boldly walk into a room and where appropriate introduce myself to someone new. But this event was something so off skew to my usual format I had to rely on inquisitive nature to lead me rather than confidence in a subject matter. Please note, I've not written that I'm a subject matter expert . The event was truly an eye opening bombardment of Infosec content from speakers, to classrooms, to sponsors. In my previous post here I set the scene of my intentions of what I wanted to learn so I won't regurgitate it again but it'd be reasonable to surmise that the words 'secure' and 'cloud' shouldn't be used in the same sentence.

SnapLogic Delivers RESTful PaaS Environment for the Cloud

In an age of RESTful APIs SnapLogic is calling for a new integration playbooks that has been specifically designed for cloud computing environments. The company today unveiled a that consists of over 160 pre-built connectors that leverage RESTful APIs in the cloud. As a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) environment capable of being deployed on a public or private clouds, Maneesh Joshi, director of product marketing for SnapLogic, says a new era of integration driven by APIs is making it cost effective for SnapLogic to pre-build connectors that can be now much more simply deployed on a multitenant version of the company's Snaplex middleware platform.

Rather than forcing customers to implement expensive middleware frameworks, Joshi says the SnapLogic Integration Cloud is designed to give organizations all the benefits of multi-point integration as needed. Most organizations only need to integrate a limited set of applications. The SnapLogic Integration Cloud allows them to leverage pre-built connectors to integrate most popular enterprise applications, while also allowing them to build their own connectors to integrate custom applications via a Java-based software development kit (SDK).

I recently did a on Intelligence Amplification, Artificial Intelligence, Argument Mapping and Douglas Engelbart's contributions to computing and user interface design and collective wisdom.

Below the video interview is the article Into the Deep Blue Yonder .

Small cause

Today's modern software development is very different from the low-level programming you had to endure in the early days of computing. Computer science invented concepts like "high-level programming languages" that abstract a lot of the menial tasks away that are necessary to perform the desired functionality. Examples of these abstractions are register allocation, memory management and control structures. But even if we step into programming at a "high level", we build whole cities of skyscrapers (metaphorically speaking) on top of those foundation layers. And still, if we make errors in the lowest building blocks of our buildings, they will come crashing down like a tower in a game of jenga.

This story illustrates one such error in a small and low building block that has widespread and expensive effects. And while the problem might seem perfectly avoidable in isolation, in reality, there are no silver bullets that will solve those problems completely and forever.

WHY .NET IS THE MOST PREFERRED TECHNOLOGY FOR DEVELOPEMNT?

The world is moving to dynamic metamorphism. The massive Indian market is changing at an ultra rapid speed. This pace of change continues to be accelerated with digital channels growing exponentially. Owing to the ever growing requirements of programming and technology, Microsoft realised the need to introduce the platform that was readily accessible, it was then when the leading developer created .NET in February 2002. The behemoth software developer Microsoft is entrenched in the corporate and world of business enterprises. Many corporations chose .NET (pronounced as DOTNET) owing to the functionality and language interoperability. One of the loftiest creations by Microsoft, Dot net, is becoming the seedbed for many start-ups and established corporations. Microsoft offers developers the opportunity to become certified at multiple levels of skill training, and experience. This opportunity makes all the more simple for start-ups to work with Dot Net developer companies. Microsoft certification provides a direct way for the client and vendor to make sure their needs and competencies sync well. Dot NET technology provides a new approach for software development. This happened to be the first development designed after the advent of internet. Dot NET platforms usually run on a single server box making it more efficient. Today, companies that go for cloud hosting solutions, like Amazon Web Services, dot NET is still a good choice as a matter of fact running few devices is more economical. Today with the high level programming languages and development platforms thousands of businesses prefer .NET framework for improved productivity and efficient performance to push the growth trajectory. Microsoft .NET framework allows business industries to get intuitive, responsive and robust business applications for web and desktop for impeccable performance and success.

5 things I learnt from Code Complete 2

I made a simple rule - I would make sure I read for about 30 mins everyday: no more no less; I wasn't bothered about how long it would take or my reading speed, all I cared about was my consistency and understanding of the concepts. I finally finished the book about five months later (sounds like eternity huh?). The book is a little on the verbose side however I learnt a lot - I mean a REAL LOT - and here are my top five lessons from it.

Rebirth of the blog

So I set up my blog over a year ago and basically found time to make one blog post. Even if it was on a very important subject (Cheesecake) that wasn't really enough to count as having started blogging. That said I'm not going to delete it as I think I'll regret it sometime in the future, so there it is down there.

Of course a lot happens in over a year in anyone's life but I think I've gone through quite a bit in the last year, I started this blog in part to keep track of my progress through my teacher training. And maybe if I'd done it I might have coped better, but I doubt it. Turns out as much as I loved teaching my life didn't have room for it, in summary I gave in and put the teaching dream back in the box only half way through my teacher training year.

Always good for a surprise: PyConDE 2013

As before, the conference was a mix between different types of talks. It seems like this year we had less people attending compared to last year, at least the crowd in the main hall looked much smaller (see photo).

The answer to this 20-doors problem, of course, is absolutely not - you'd be 0 percent secure, since the bad guys are generally smart enough to find the unlocked door.

While the 20-doors problem serves to illustrate how important it is to secure your services as part of a comprehensive enterprise IT strategy, the same lesson applies to enterprise in general: applying inconsistent security policies across an organization leads to weaknesses hackers are only too happy to exploit. However, when we're talking about the entire enterprise, the cybersecurity challenge is vastly more complex than simply securing all your software interfaces. Adequate security involves people, process, information, as well as technology. Getting cybersecurity right, therefore, depends upon .

While the resurgence of new tech IPOs is nowhere near the mid-1990s dotcom bubble rate, there is definitely something to show for this year's 25+ tech IPOs that have hit the market out of total 145 newly public companies. Included in this arena are 3D printing companies, cloud-based marketing software firms, big data firms, and several other of the hot areas that have flooded the pages of tech publications like TechCrunch, VentureBeat, Wired, and Business Insider.

A Roller Coaster History

Here's the Best Way to Build Your Maiden first App

You've come to the right place if you want to build your first web application. In this post I'll examine both common, universal tips for newbie developers as well as tips that can be used by persons with a technical background, those who have a sound knowledge of web design. At the outset let me make one thing clear: starting web apps are normally simple ones; you have to subsequently build on the code. Simply put, that's what the evolution of web software is all about.

WHAT ARE WEB APPS?

Spinning Plates at the OpenStack Summit in Hong Kong

The is less than a month away now. Leading up to the Summit I was a track chair for the . We had many excellent proposals that we're voted up by the community. Selecting the finalists wasn't easy. I think we found a good mix of sessions about applications built on top of OpenStack, the tools that enable developers to build those applications effectively, and the design decisions that developers will need to consider when building apps on OpenStack.

Beyond that I'll be spinning plates at Summit! I've got a schedule packed full of demos, presentations, panel moderation, and design. In summary, here's where you can find me before and during the Summit.

Join Me In London For The API Strategies Track of Apps World

Apparently, next week should be officially dubbed "Global API Strategy Week." The tech industry is already one big conferencapalooza given the way so many events conflict with one another. Even with Thanksgiving week in its midst, November alone includes developer-focused events such as , , , and . But rarely do we get two conferences about nearly the exact same thing at the same time. In this case, we have two events next week on nearly opposite sides of the planet; each dedicated to the subject of API strategies.

Now, If you subscribe to Netflix director of engineering Daniel Jacobsen'son why you probably don't need an API strategy, you might wonder how it is that the API economy could possibly sustain two simultaneous events on the subject matter. Jacobsen argues that for many organizations, APIs are a tactic. It's a semantic argument that to me, lacks context (note: has published his own ). Maybe to the CEO of a big company, the APIs that are being released (internally or externally) are a tactic. But to the group or division that's releasing that API, I can guarantee you that it is most often viewed as a strategy and their approach to success should be structured as any great strategy would.

HRB Innovation: Post #1--Catalysts

The Innovation Catalysts by Robert Martin (originally published in June 2011). Intuit, the well-known software development company, saw its Net Promoter (would you refer the company to someone else) Scores falling. Scott Cook, founder and CEO, developed a team of 9 innovation catalyst coaches to help run experiments and learn from clients: "painstorming"--finding customer pain points; "sol-jam"-- generating solutions; and "code-jam"-- generating fast code to create fast prototypes for customers . The theory was to delight (Design for Delight) not just satisfy customers. Cook wanted to build design thinking into the company's DNA. Innovation Catalysts were to spend 25% of their time on big payoff projects for Intuit.

Employment Law in England and Wales: The Essential Guide for UKV Managers

The attached document (available to download as a ,pdf below) was created for the use of our UKV managers. We recognise how easy it is to stumble into the pitfalls when dealing with matters of even basic Employment law. We try to give our people the tools to do their job. Whilst, they may have undergone courses or even classroom styled training in a range of general subjects useful for their work, it certainly has helped over the years to have a handbook available to check the finer Employment rules or to help make a decision to the benefit of our colleague and the company.

Our current handbook is entitled:

Fair trade

The biggest challenge of being an ethical consumer is understanding what is ethical consumerism

Consumers have traditionally looked to Consumer Organisations to provide them with independent comparative and verifiable information on products and services related to safety, performance, quality and value for money, so that they can make choices and purchase with confidence. With globalisation and increased awareness of the impact of trade on both environment and economy, consumers have also become increasingly interested in being informed on the environmental, ethical and social impacts of these products and services, and the businesses that provide them. Consumers International's studies on, green food claims, the sustainable coffee sector, unethical drug promotion and most recently, 'What Assures Consumers' (in collaboration with AccountAbility), all highlight the challenge that consumers meet when trying to decide, not only between so called ethical and unethical products, but the confusion that is caused by the large numbers of logo's and claims, when distinguishing between sustainable products.

Book delayed, development moves forward

Only one of my new books arrived, so I'm not really sure what to do while I wait for the other one.I decided to start with some administrative work and set some boundaries on how much of my life I will devote to this game development project.I have a 40 hour job with a long commute, and my wife Gina and I have been running 3 times a week, and most importantly, I want to leave time to play the The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD remake that just came out. That game is like my cocaine.

With the absence of tangible programming to learn, I figure I'll "Nikola Tesla" this project and build it in my flippin' mind.My goals were to build something that:

Got Discipline?

A common question we get regarding Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) is "What makes DAD more disciplined than other approaches to agile?"It's a fair question, particularly from someone who is new to DAD.This blog posting explores this question, explicitly summarizing the critical strategies that exhibit the greater levels of discipline in DAD as compared with what Mark and I see in many agile teams today.

It is clear that many common agile practices require discipline. For example, agile teams it takes discipline to hold concise, streamlined coordination/Scrum meetings; to consistently deliver business value every iteration; to test continuously throughout the lifecycle; to improve your process "in flight"; to work closely with stakeholders and many more things.Discipline is very important to the success of agile teams, see for a detailed discussion, and DAD takes it to the next level in the following ways:

Task 1

Integrated Development Environment (IDE) -A software application that provides comprehensive facilities to computer programmers for software development. An IDE normally consists of a source code editor, build automation tools and a debugger. The debugger in flash is a bit crap since it will identify the error but sometimes takes you to a unrelenting part of the code instead.

The different colour of the code are different keywords. The parts of the code coloured in purple are creating commands for the code, the blue coloured parts of the code represents the different commands for the code, also the part codes in green show which part of it is strings. If anything wasn't spelt correctly that part of the code wouldn't change its colour.

Software Managers: Cultivate a "Rockstar Team"

I read an excellent article by Scott Hanselman titled over the weekend, and I agreed with almost every word of it.

There is so much emphasis these days on individual achievement and "lone wolf" success that people easily forget software development is largely a team activity.

What is Going on with the Obamacare Website, Anyway?

Yesterday morning, Erza Klein published that caused a bit of a kerfluffle. It was very blunt, calling the rollout a "failure" and a "disaster". And it caused quite a few left-leaning websites some uncomfortableness, since these criticisms are, unfortunately, very accurate. Put simply, the website is a mess. But, this isn't quite the catastrophe some (especially those on the Right) are making it out to be.

First, a little background about me: I've been working in IT since 1995, and I have worked on multiple web-site launches for both the federal and state governments. I spent 8 years working for a contractor in Arlington, VA, helping to design and launch websites for the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC), ENERGY STAR, and the USDA. I spent 3 years working for a contractor in Tysons Corner, VA that worked with the Navy Personnel Research and Development Center (NPRDC) in San Diego. I spent a year working for the state of Delaware, helping them launch a new website that allowed companies to incorporate in the state. And, just to balance that experience, I also spent two years working for a dot-com in Rockville, MD back in 1999/2000, coming in with them months before their site launched.

Agile : Some facts

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Agile software development is a sort of method used to accomplish goals within software projects. A simple design for projects in order to help ensure they are accomplished within a reasonable amount of time, and within set budget constraints. Mind you this exists for a reason, as it's estimated that 80% of all software projects fail, coming either over budget or running out of time. This is huge! How can so many software projects fail in such a spectacular manner?

We must take a look at some fundamental problems plaguing most projects :

"It really works!"

1:18-1:33: That's the kind of euphoria I get every now and then these days. Celebrating small victories is important, as is keeping your spirits up and your perspectives intact.

You see, I've been spent the last two weeks coding, coding and coding, and the next 10 will most likely be the same.

Week of October 13

This week we had our first test in Object-Oriented Programming. It counts for about 25% of our total grade.I thought that the time allowed was adequate, and I had time to check my answers. In fact, I found a few mistakes, so I was grateful for the time allotment. In addition, the test questions correlated well with the material presented in class.

Many of the questions on the test were similar to a recent quiz, in which we were asked to identify the constructors or destructors called by various declarations.A class was created (called A) that prints a message when a constructor is called. For example, if the default constructor is called, A() gets printed, copy constructor, A(A) gets printed, etc. There were around 8 questions of this type on the test.In our study group, we prepared for this type of question by plugging the code from the quiz into compileonline.com and trying various scenarios.

AGILE: Tools for Producing Quality Software

In the world of software development methodologies, there is definitely more than one way to skin the proverbial cat. One of these (or rather, a group of them) is known as Agile software development. Agile is in fact an entire category of software development methodologies that are loosely connected by common goals detailed in the .

The basic idea behind Agile is that software development should be "people friendly" on all levels. Agile strives to bridge gaps in communication between software developers, managers and customers. It accomplishes this by encouraging developers to release code frequently and get feedback from the customer as frequently as possible.

Open Source: Some things to consider

Open source software is amazing. It provides everyone the opportunity to look at how the software they are using is structured, and what has gone in to developing it. Through this openness, the software can be modified and enhanced by anyone who is capable. This means bugs can be fixed quickly and efficiently, without waiting for the original developers as with proprietary software. However, open source isn't without it's share of problems. I love the wave of open alternatives to common commercial products that has hit the internet in the past 10 years. Firefox as opposed to Internet Explorer, Open Office as opposed to Office, Gimp as opposed to Adobe Photoshop, VLC as opposed to Windows Media Player, the list goes on.

With open source software you face a problem of people contributing, but not seeing a larger picture in the software's lifespan. Quick hacks are very popular in open source communities, as far as bug fixes or enhancements to the software. These hacks are often written by people hastily, omitting some very important programming concepts. This is that their code ought to be clear, and readable. Clarity is a cornerstone of developing good code, as in any quick hack you write, someone will be without you trying to read it and figure out what is happening. Another problem with community involvement in software development is that code contributed by random people is often not completely modular.

OPEN SOURCE: What it is and what it isn't

This is the most difficult blog post I have had to write to date. While some people only know "open source" as a buzzword they heard on the street or in a forum, the ideology behind this term has had an extremely profound effect on my life, especially in the context of how I develop software. To avoid posting a giant wall of text, I will limit my post to dispelling some myths and explaining some concepts about open source software (OSS) that the public sometimes has difficulty grasping.

Here are some myths:

The Software Chef

Imagine you are a music composer. Would you reel in a singer for your soon-to-be-a-hit song without having heard how they sing?

Now imagine you are a restaurateur. Would you have someone be your without having them cook something for you first?

Who Are These Software Developers? Evans Data Study Reveals Insight Demographics of Developers

Who are software developers? Many readers here themselves are software developers who have developed their craft in a myriad of ways-self-learning, training in college, the slow rise up the ranks of a corporation, being on the ground-level of a startup. Developers can be as different as the languages that they employ.

Since 2001, . conducts survey twice a year to study demographics of the software developer profession. In the current issue the report comes to the conclusion that the average developer is 36 years old and married, and that he or she has two or three children. That does not quite fit into the earlier image of the nerd seated behind the computer, which states developers are mostly single and don't end up in many relationships.

A word on Software Defined Radios (SDR)

SOFTWARE DEFINED RADIO (SDR), resembles the techniques for creating software blocks of functional radio for reception/transmission. The concept extends from plain AM/ FM to Wi-Max/LTE radio transceivers and beyond. In other words, software defined radio (SDR) is defined as a radio in which the digitization is performed at some stage downstream from the antenna. Then the radio can use flexible and reconfigurable functional blocks for the implementation of digital signal processing algorithms. As technology advances, the digitization might be at, or very close to the antenna, such that almost all the radio functionalities are realized using software using high speed and reprogrammable digital signal processing engine

The old age radios had everything, from RF tuner to A/V detection in complete anlog domain with limited controls based on some varying resistance or impedance. The current radios consist of a mixture of analog and digital building blocks. The radio frequency (RF) functionalities are most likely being implemented using analog circuits, while the baseband functionalities are more suitable for DSP implementations. Now SDRs handles the capability to digitally tune to an RF signal, sometimes a few Mhz band at once, further processing DSP will includeextremely configurableFIR /IIR filters , AGC controls, DFT blocks, Squelch, Vox controls, flexible IF creators, various modulator/demodulator blocks, encrypt/decrypt capabilities, test/measurement visualisations etc.

FakeTime Preload Library (libfaketime) 0.9.5

FTPL (FakeTime Preload Library, aka libfaketime) intercepts various system library calls and tricks programs of your choice into seeing a faked system time without having to change the time system-wide. This can be used for running legacy software with Y2K bugs, testing software for year-2038 compliance, debugging time-related issues such as expired SSL certificates, and using software that ceases to run outside a certain time frame. The faked time can be specified either absolutely or relative to the real current time, and optionally also affects file timestamps. The faked clock continues to run, but can optionally be frozen, slowed down, or made faster. A wrapper script "faketime" simplifies the usage, similar to tools such as fakechroot.

RELEASE NOTES: New features: support for nanosecond resolution, saving timestamps to files, speeding up/slowing down per-process timers, and faking system calls such as sleep() and alarm(). Adds an option to use the same global clock setting for all libfaketime-spawned processes. Support for advancing the time with each time-related system call ("deterministic time"). A new "timeprivacy" wrapper ensures that programs are started with unique timestamps. Fixes: significantly improved support for OSX; fixed support for recent glibc versions; and improved compatibility with multiarch/multilib Linux systems.
