Binh Luu

BinhLuu maintains his career through participating in a wide range of activities. Born in 1956 in Vietnam, he grew up to pursue a career in the military. After graduating as a military university professional with cybernetic, from 1974 to 1988, he then continued on to serve in the VietnameseNavy. Furthermore, in the following period of 1988 to1995, he joined the Vietnam Air-traffic Control Center to become in charge with their automated equipment. He then worked as a Project Leader in the Enterprise software Development and Training Company, which he is still currently doing. Although his career revolves around specializing as a programmer and developing software, he does have a particular interest for photography. Binh Luu doesn't have a professional degree for photography, however he still persists in capturing special moments in his spare time. In regards to his valuable experiences in a range of different majors he has participated in, his images contain a wonderful mixture of life and a good sense of aesthetic quality.



He believes that technology and photography have the same sense of creativity. In his mind, both are considered non-stop waves of imagination. In addition, to Binh, photography is not only just a personal hobby but also a major component of his everyday-life. However, due to the economic problems arising in early 2002, he was unable to continue his passion as it was simply too hard financially, to buy the develop chemicals for images. Fortunately, a few years after, when digital cameras become popular and affordable, he was able to continue his passion of photography. With a new camera at hand, he become more determined and went to study photography at a higher level, enabling him to use these new skills to develop his own work till this very day.




LANGUAGE:



Binh Luu uses the concept Fibonacci Sequenceas a rule of thumb, when aiming to capture creative photographs.



To elaborate,in the 12th century, Leonardo Fibo- nacci discovered a simple numerical sequence that is the foundation for an incred- ible mathematical rule. Starting with 0 and 1, each new number in the sequence is the sum of the two before it, for example0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144and so forth. The ratio of each successive pair of numbers in the sequence will be around 1.618as 5/3 is 1.666or 8/5 is 1.60. After 40th number in the se- quence, it will result in the number:1.618033988749895Thus, the ratio of each successive pair of numbers will assist in defining the golden points in the frame. Since the Golden Ratio has been defined as the geometrical proportion, we will discover that proportion is found in some natural geometrical shapes, an example is the nautilus.



This number sequence is not an accident as it is the explanation for the arrangement of the flower petals, for the flyway of the hawks, for the organization of the leaves on the tree or for the structure of the sea-shell and so on. The Golden Ratio has been played such a vital role in topics ranging from fundamental theories of the universe to the stock market. There are many artists, architects and designers and even musical compositions that have used the Golden Ratio in their works in order to achieve this "visual effectiveness". Binh Luu therefore, is able to successfully apply the structure of Fibonacci into his images.



Besides following the Fibonacci sequence to frame the object in his images,Binh also concentrates on the brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness and layers in the photographs he captures. He makes sure that there is enough light reflecting on the object he is capturing so there would be no significant bright- ness or contrast as a result.

In1984, Binh invested all of his money to take a short photography training course in Riga, Latvia.He believed it was the right time to im- merse himself in the vast world of imagery. Spending a long amount of time in photog- raphy dark rooms, he learnt not only to see with his eyes, but to feel and completely un- derstand and develop photographs in his own unique style. As his most favourite topics are landscape and nature, Binh enjoys interact- ing with new people and exploringthe world around him. He once said,"The image will be meaningless if you just simply click the but- ton." So Binh not only attempts to capture particular moments, he also finds a way to fur- ther understand people or objects he would like to focus, before pressing the button on his camera.



In "Bo pagoda", the separation between dark and bright in an image is quite evi- dent as the photographer attempts to make the shadow darker and highlight the brighter areas. In addition, the contrast of an image often makes it look more vibrant.



Saturation is another aspect to consider as it is similar to contrast, however itis about separation of colours. Using the "Mother and daughter" image as an ex- ample, the photographer is not able to change the colours of the nature, howev- er they can have the object with a complimentary background. The flowers are strong focalpoints as they are separatedby the distinct blurredbackground-layer. The intention of presenting striking detail in the flowers is highlighted, enabling the viewers to draw attention to the intended object. Moreover, to emphasise the focal point in his images, Binh explicitly uses the sharpness tool in his work. Attention to detail is his priority and continues to illustrate this aspect by using specific tools in his photography.



The nature in Binh's images give off a sense of peaceful- ness and tranquillity. He was able to catch a memorable instant of nature at its best dwindling in the distance.



In "Tet", a bunch of delicate flowers has been well focused with good saturation.while in "Hide and seek", there is an- excellent contrast and silhou- ette shown. Binh has been able to turn the grass into a plain black layer to highlight the dawn in the springtime.



No name: This image shows one of Binh's more inspiring pieces. It shows an image of a 13 year old girl, but what the audience isn't aware of is that she's already bared two chil- dren at such a young age. The backstory of this young girl is that she must work extremely hard each day to take care of her family. In this image, she is busy sewing, as well as taking care of her daughter.



No matter her circumstance, Binh was able to capture her smiling, some light wrinkles and dark-toned skin face. It is an inspiring image as it not only conveys a good story, it is able to inspire people. Thus, Binh is able to become successful with his goal of adding meaning and understanding to his work.
