Google Announces 'ChromeCast' For TV, (Also Compatible With iPhone and iPad)

Alongside pulling the wraps off the , Google has tonight also announced a new software product for TV that it's calling, 'CHROMECAST.'

Rivalling that of Apple's AIRPLAY API, is admittedly a little more clunky in its implementation, seeing users having to physically plug in a HDMI 'CHROMECAST' ADAPTER in order to get the feature to work. When it does, though, Google says that you'll be sending your movie, photo and music content to your BIG-SCREEN TV, wirelessly, in NO TIME!

Google is also going to be offering a SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT KIT for its new 'ChromeCast' service -- which, (given Apple's 'AirPlay' feature is built right into its mobile OS), left us with one question: WHAT DOES 'CHROMECAST' OFFER TO THE END-USER THAT AIRPLAY DOESN'T?

WELL, HERE'S THE ANSWER: Chromecast's standout feature has to be its ability to send tabs you have open, or happen to be reading (or watching) in CHROME FOR MAC, to your TV. This is an added bonus, and it's really nice to see Google finally offer its users the ability to resume watching video content on any screen they please.

Currently, the HDMI stick required for the service to function with your TV is (sadly) "SOLD OUT". In fact, the ChromeCast dongle reached 'sell-out' status just 4-HOURS after its official unveiling.

The stick supports the sending of video content from Netflix, YouTube, Play Movies and Google Music, with other service support set to be added in the future.

As of RIGHT NOW, you can . The device will begin shipping in 3 TO 4 WEEKS. If you would rather wait for the device to be restocked , however, for a LIMITED-TIME you'll also get 3-MONTHS OF NETFLIX INCLUDED with your purchase.
