Nintendo Isn't Accepting Japanese Indie Developers for the Wii U

Sometimes I think that Nintendo wants the Wii U to fail. The console itself isn't all that bad, and with the proper software development and marketing it could be a pretty decent success. Even with that, it seems that Nintendo themselves stand in their own way at every turn with decisions that make everyone scratch their head in disbelief. In the latest decision made for the Wii U, Nintendo will not be accepting indie developer submissions if they are based in Japan.

This all came to light from a form on the official website of the 2013 Game Developers Conference (GDC). The official Nintendo form states in both Japanese and English, "We are not accepting applications from developers located in Japan at this time."

Nintendo attempted to clarify why they have made this decision in a statement to CVG saying, "The policy in question is the decision of Nintendo's department responsible for licensing activities in each region, and the licensing department of Nintendo is currently not accepting subject applications from individuals in Japan." If you are an independent game developer located in any other part of the world however, you can go right ahead and submit your application.

Not only are they giving their own home country the shaft but locking out one of the largest talent pools in the gaming industry. Some of the greatest games in history, both Nintendo made and otherwise, have come out of Japan so you would think Nintendo would think of getting that region in order first. Time and time again we are seeing decisions like this one that not only cripple the Wii U but make people lose even more faith in Nintendo.
