Rackspace to expand Blacksburg operation

In a prime example of Montgomery County's emergence as a global technology player, international information technology corporation Rackspace, a resident of the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, is expanding its Blacksburg operation and generating scores of new jobs for New River Valley residents.

The announcement was made Monday by Governor Bob McDonnell, and according to a release from McDonnell's office, Rackspace will invest $5.5 million to expand its Blacksburg operations center into a new 31,435-square-foot office building in the Corporate Research Center.

"Virginia remains one of the most active data markets in the country, and Rackspace's Montgomery County cloud computing operation is thriving," McDonnell stated. "I look forward to Rackspace's continued growth and the creation of new high-tech jobs for the New River Valley region."

With the expansion of its office, it will expand its personnel as well, estimating the creation of over 100 new jobs. The construction is underway and is slated for completion by March of next year.

"Rackspace's announcement is great news for our community," read Montgomery County Board of Supervisors chairman Jim Politis' statement on the Rackspace revelation. "The expansion will add more quality, high-paying technology jobs to our community. It also signifies that there is a strong, growing IT and software development cluster here in Montgomery County."

Rackspace is headquartered out of San Antonio, Texas, and is an open-source business-based cloud computing company. According to its website, Rackspace delivers "enterprise-class hybrid cloud infrastructures to businesses of all sized around the world." It was founded in 1998 and now services over 205,000 customers across the globe. It "combines public cloud, private cloud and dedicated bare metal computing to provide" a digital infrastructure for its clients.

Technology-savvy graduates from both Radford University and Virginia Tech, steeped in the kind of programming and technical support Rackspace's renowned "Fanatical Support" staff offers its customers, played a large part in influencing the company's decision to build on its presence in Montgomery County. According to business operations manager Robert McAden, the decision to expand was "easy," and "the area's national reputation as a great place for families and outdoor recreation were all cited as contributing" factors, the release stated.

"The pool of critical technical talent provided by Virginia Tech, Radford, the University of Virginia, and James Madison University has helped the Blacksburg office grow into a large Rackspace development center," McAden stated.
