Java Patch Kills Bugs

© mikebaird
Apple has shipped a security update for both Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard, alongside the release of it's iOS 4.3. The update patches 27 bugs, including one through which hackers could hijack your Mac by running an attack code.
This patch should therefore be considered a critical download, even though not all versions of Mac OS X are equally vulnerable. The patch plugs 16 vulnerabilities in Java SE6 and 11 in Java SE 5 for Leopard, while the update for Snow Leopard addresses 16 bugs in Java SE 6. Apple has committed to supporting Java in Leopard and Snow Leopard, but has warned developers not to rely on it and has instead announced that it will contribute to Oracle's competing OpenJDK project. So it follows that Apple is unlikely to continue developing Java for Mac OS X Lion.
